I can empathize with your financial situation. The economy is still in dire straits, however, I can see the company's POV too. You are not the only customer of theirs who is struggling nd not paying their bills to them. Ask friends, family, and community agencies for assistance with the deposit. A short or long term loan that you can pay back when you can, as you can.

put it on a credit card. If all that is standing between power and no power is a measly $180 deposit, put it on a credit card and pay it off over a few months. If you dont have a credit card, surely someone you know does.

If she is already in financial straits, putting it on a cc and not being able to pay that on top of the other bills she is struggling with would be ludicrous, and further damage her credit. Borrowing from friends and family, or seeking agency assistance is the better solution.

Putting $180 on a credit card is not going to ruin your credit. Even at the minimum payment/month, finance charges for $ 180 would be at most a couple dollars. She would have to pay back friends and family if she borrowed from them, so why not skip the hassle of owing another person and handle it herself, not to mention avoiding putting a further burden on someone else.
A credit card is a useful tool in emergency situations if it is used responsibly.

Your missing the point moonpies. If the OP can't make her payments on time as it is because of lack of funds, obviously she doesn't have a few extra dollars to plunk down on a credit card payment. Borrowing from friends and family she wouldn't have to worry about interest or minimum payments and emergency assistance from an agency or church she wouldn't have to pay back at all. Her credit may already be damaged for all we know.
