I got scam by America's Choice Reader's Service and now I'm $1,423.03 debt

I am dealing with Credit & Collection Solutions, Inc. (CCSI) right now because of an unscrupulous magazine subscription telemarketing company. The magazine service involved in this case is CRC of Virginia (aka: Community Reading Clubs of Virginia). The best thing you can do is spend a little bit of time learning your state's laws on Telemarketing as well as Debt Collections. One tactic both CCSI and CRC of Virginia used was to say that the subscription could not be cancelled and that is was a binding contract because they the conversation "taped" or "recorded." I learned that in both the states involved for me (Indiana and Texas) all agreements made during a telemarketing phone call have to be reduced to writing and sent to the purchaser, signed by the purchaser and returned to the company to be a valid, enforceable contract. Also, in the state involved during the time of the intial "sale" of magazine subscriptions - cancellation has to be allowed within 7 seven days of receiving the first product. So, the agreement/contract they say they have might not even be valid in your case. CCSI violated state law in several different ways, as well. Report these companies to the Attorney General's Office in your state and the state they claim to be operating out of as well as reporting them to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). You can find out how to do this by a simple online search. Also, you can Google "Initial Debt Collection Dispute Letter" and find sites offering form letters that you can print or copy and send them to CCSI, if you have not already. If you fit the criteria for this initial letter this will force CCSI to provide you with written information. The key is getting these companies to send you account information (and in my case I demanded a verified copy of the "written, signed" contract and since then they are backing off and saying they will stop collections, remove the account from collections and close out the account. Learn the basics of your state's laws as they specifically apply to debt collectors and if it applies to you, telemarketing sales. Keep in touch with these companies as best as you can and speak to them as a well informed person who knows their rights. They operate under the assumption that people do not actually know their rights and will believe their bullying, threats and harassment to "protect" their credit ratings that are so important in these tough economic times. If CCSI enters a report on your credit history then follow the steps needed through the credit reporting bureaus to dispute the entry. If you follow the steps and CCSI does not prove up the debt properly then the entry will be removed from your credit history. Don't just sit and worry about this, take action and deal with the companies using state and federal laws set up to protect us from such things.

As an addendum, if you provided these people with your checking account, credit or debit card information you really need to talk to your bank and close out/change your account. They are stealing from you. If it will take you a few days to get things situated with legitimate companies you pay through your bank account or credit/debit cards then see if your bank can stop all auto-payments from your account. It seems like they are used to having people tell their bank to not pay anything from their "company" so they submit payment requests under other company names to get money out of your account.

I got scam by America's Choice Reader's Service and now I'm $1,423.03 debt

Over the past few months I've received several calls (to a number registered with DO NOT CALL) from an agency wanting to "verify I am receiving the magazines I ordered." My standard answer was, "I didn't order any magazines, take me off your list." on 15-Jan-2012 I received a similar call from a "Nicole" at "Readers Services" (number on caller ID was 1-800-555-1212) asking the same thing. She said I had signed up for a set of magazines including GLAMOUR, ROLLING STONE, SHAPE, ELLE, and others, for 5 YEARS, and a monthly charge of around $69. I told her I never did that; she said she could reduce it but not cancel it, again because "the magazines are preordered from the publisher." So she did that, agreed to send me all the details in the mail (she said it would come from Ft Meyers, FL) and sent me to "John" her supervisor. John asked me to verify my credit card number; he gave me the expiration date of 2013 but none of my cards have that expiration date. I refused to give him a credit card number. But he said he could not process the "reduction" without a valid card and without a valid card they would report me to a collections agency so, yes, I finally caved and gave him one. Then he passed me to his "bookkeeper" who proceeded to ask me a number of questions including one about my income. I refused to answer; he said he needed a number so I said $100/month. He said he couldn't process my reduction if I was going to "play games." At that point I told him I did not have to answer his questions and I hung up on him.
I then called my credit card company and learned that these people had charged me $59 (though they said the first payment would not be charged until the 1st of next month). I put a freeze on my card and will call tomorrow to dispute that charge and have future ones blocked. I have since filed several complaints with various agencies.

I got scam by America's Choice Reader's Service and now I'm $1,423.03 debt

I keep getting these phone calls from a collection agency telling me I owe money for a magazine subscription from 2008 but I never order magazines and when I ask what the magazine is they say they can't tell me due to privacy protection. I am not paying a bill I know nothing about. I can't even find how to contact American Reader Service. Can anybody give me a phone number for them?? Thank you. Medford Oregon

I got scam by America's Choice Reader's Service and now I'm $1,423.03 debt

I keep getting these phone calls telling me they are a collection agency for American Reader Service and that I owe for magazines. I don't get magazines except for a magazine that supposedly comes with my paid membership with Handyman Club of America. This is the only magazine I have received but this company keeps telling me I owe for magazines and when I tell them I want to know what magazines I supposedly received they tell me they don't have that info. I try to find American Reader Service but can't. Today I got a call from Universal Readers Inc. re: my magazine and when I asked him what magazine he hung up on me. I tried to call the number back and it said not available and to leave a message. I am calling Consumer Protection Agency here in Oregon and I already reported American Reader Services to the Better Business Bureau and I will go all the way to the Attorney General if I have to. These people need to be stopped.

I got scam by America's Choice Reader's Service and now I'm $1,423.03 debt

I keep getting these calls from a collection agency telling me I owe over $500.00 for magazines with American Reader Services and when I tell them I don't get magazines and I want to know what magazine they are talking about they say they don't have that info. When you try and look up that company you get all these complaints from people and the phone number given is a company who use to take phone calls for the Reader Service but the number is no good. Today I got a call from Universal Readers, Inc. and when I asked him what magazine he hung up on me. When I called the phone# back it said they were unavailable and to leave a message. I am calling the Consumer Protection Agency in Oregon and my Attorney General. I already contacted the Better Business Bureau. Don't let these people get away with this. Dispute the charges and get in touch with your state' complaint place.

The collection agency I got a call from when I called that number back it said that I had reached E-Solutions and the Magic Jack customer you have called is not available. This is a scam and some people might end up paying them but don't pay them a dime. If it goes to collection just dispute it. Don't let them scam you. Report them to the Better Business Bureau, your Attorney General, Consumer Protection Agency and anyone else you can call regarding this place.
