This is pure piracy. A good example for passing SOPA and PIPA.

It was ironic that only a day after the massive, coordinated protest against the SOPA and PIPA anti-piracy bills that have been making their way through both houses of Congress, one of the best arguments against these laws was provided by the federal government itself, in a raid on the file-sharing service known as MegaUpload. Not only did the authorities manage to shut down the site and arrest its founders WITHOUT the need for either SOPA or PIPA, but the facts of the case raise even more red flags about what the government — and private companies — would be able to do to similar services under the proposed legislation.

They don't need a law to shut down illegal operations. If you are not downloading ebooks, music or movies, you would not be complaining. If you feel its ok to steal, then open up your wallet and let these artists take your livelyhood away like you are taking theirs. SOPA and PIPA will be effective because all of these pirate sites will be running scared, like some of them already are. The internet has become one big theft ring and action is long overdue.

Diane, you are assuming that anyone who disagrees with the bill must be a thief and involved in illegal downloads. That is erroneous, dangerous thinking, almost as dangerous as the bill itself.

Then you are in a dream world or don't have a clue. Illegal has nothing to do with free speech. Speak all you want but don't steal. How many times does one have to tell you thieves that pirate sites need to be dealt with and free speech doesn't equal stealing. I waste many hours chasing after pirate thieves and it has gotten out of control and needs to be dealt with as swiftly as Megaupload.

I haven’t heard much in the way of a legitimate pro-SOPA argument yet. Instead, the argument that is being made is something more along the lines of “people are always going to get around things, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to stop them, ” and “something needs to be done to protect content from piracy.” The arguments against SOPA are detailed and specific, and the arguments for it are vague, condescending, and seem to be spawned from irritation at the fact that there are arguments against SOPA. Not only that, but pro-SOPA advocates are trying to justify their vagueness and condescension with pithy little explainations that they aren’t “nerds” or “experts.” Both of those words are used in a context that makes them sound like an insult more often than not.
The fact of the matter is that the majority of the support for this bill comes from individuals who are not educated on the subject, but are not educated and proud of it. It’s good to see the opposition, but it’s scary to see that no matter how good the arguments may be, they are hampered by a fundamental disconnect, an inability to come to terms with the idea that knowledge of the technical workings of the Internet and the ability to parse and write policy are not mutually exclusive. There seem to be plenty of people who advocate spending a little more time on this, taking it slow, and bringing in the nerds. The problem is that SOPA supporters are SOPA supporters because they haven’t been listening. Is there anything that’s going to make them start listening now?

I think that InfiniRead is a new name for the notorious WIREDSHELF.com and also for LIBRIOT.com All three sites used the same identification numbers for the books they illegally "loaned" to paying subscribers, and those numbers were not ISBNs.

AnnR.Key,
InfiniRead appears to have a presence in California, so your remark about SOPA is irrelevant. SOPA was to stop FOREIGN piracy. Maybe you ought to read the 70 page Bill.

The proposed legislation threatens free speech and innovation, and enables law enforcement to block access to entire internet domains due to infringing material posted on a single blog or webpage. It is censorship and if passed it will not stop there. YOU should read the entire bill and take a comprehension course while you're at it Annon before you open your ignorant mouth. Liberty lovers oppose SOPA.

Have trouble following the conversation Annon? If you can't keep up, keep your mouth shut. Your comment is irrelevant and incredibly ignorant to my responses to the poster who brought up SOPA.

Annon are you rally that stupid that you don't know how SOPA will affect american businesses? Under SOPA the accusing entity, or copyright holder, would be able to file a claim with the US Department of Justice and practically shut down the accused website. This would have an effect, as well, on any company that does business with the offending website. This means advertisers, service providers, search engines, payment providers and much more. If it passes, do you really believe it will stop there?

Legitimate American businesses should not be associated with pirate sites. And you don't think the violated copyright holder has the right to take action? It's not all that simple anyways. It would take many complaints and the pirate sites who get taken down are the ones who do not answer the complaints, like infiniread. I wrote them days ago and they have ignored me. Next I go to their ISP and Homeland Security with these thieves. They are required by law to follow DMCA, yet they don't have any reference of it on their site. Many sites have halted file sharing voluntarily simply because they have been skirting the law and don't want to be next. I feel that as soon as the law is passed in any form, the sites will take themselves out of sharing, like filesonic, filejungle and fileserve.

InfiniRead, like wiredshelf, is run for the profit of Chinese and/or Russian crooks. They do not purchase the e-books that they monetize. Therefore, they do not pay taxes.
They do not give away the e-books. They charge Americans more than $30 a month.
If AnnR.Key and Iron Muffin and ragon are willing to give their credit card information to people whom they should know to be dishonest, they are daft. The legal Amazon Prime program costs only $79 a year, and any e-book you borrow is at least going to be properly formatted.

AnnR.Key, let me get this straight. Do you support the existence of InfiniRead, even though it has been alleged that InfiniRead illegally duplicates and distributes in-copyright, American e-books for money, via Visa and Mastercard, to American suckers who would rather pay $30 a month to a foreign criminal than visit a free, file hosting site such as Scribd?

All businesses, foreign and domestic, are run for profit, do you know how much of America China owns? Nothing daft about using a cc that is protected with chargeback recourse. You want to talk about cheats? Americans are no slouch in that department.

Both of these bills are extremely problematic and won't do much (if anything) to deal with the issues they're supposed to deal with, but will have massive unintended consequences, further undermining innovation, job creation and the already troubled economy. Thus, the real issue is that this is a business model problem. The best way, by far, to decrease infringement is to offer awesome new services that are convenient and useful.
It's hard to find anyone with technology skills who thinks that they will be effective. Every "blockade" has an easy path around it, and the supposed "anti-circumvention" rule in SOPA will never deal with the more obvious paths around things like DNS blocking (use a different DNS or a perfectly legal foreign VPN system). The private right of action efforts are also mistargeted. They're based on the premise that infringement is done for monetary reasons. It's amusing that just a few years ago, these same industries insisted that music and movie fans never wanted to pay anything any more, but now they're claiming that these same people are paying for cyberlockers all the time? That's simply not credible. And if there's so much money to be made, the studios and labels would be opening their own cyberlockers. Either way, we've watched this game of Whac-a-mole for over a decade. It doesn't work. Every site that is shut down leads to half a dozen new ones that spring up. This is not how you tackle a problem: by making the same mistake made over and over again in the past.
