"EBT, EBT, watch me swipe my EBT"
I think the EBT should change to the WIC, where only basic assigned staples of foods should be available for purchase. An ID check should also be required. There should be a solid $200 allowance per family, and there should be no drinks, chips, fast food, etc. allowed. I am a teacher with a family (2 kids and a wife) and we are near the poverty line, but there is no way in God's name I can't cut to provide for my own family. I've had to deliver pizzas and work second jobs to keep the money flowing, but here is the ultimate point.
Provide for yourself and be responsible. BILLIONS of dollars of EBT money are being flushed every year because the government is too lazy to investigate EBT to cash fraud, illegal immigrant applications, and the like. Not only do the disabled need the money, but my two daughters expect food on the table every night, and they don't understand why they should be hungry when it's being divided onto other people's tables due to taxes.

icu2 - thanks for proving that insulting another person with no facts to the contrary only makes you look stupid.
I've taught for 3 years in a 98% black HS in one of the most economically depressed places in the nation. I know that 75% of the people there need the basic services desperately, but there is a persistent 25% that sell their EBT cards to cash repay places. I have seen the mamas on section 8, welfare, and EBT cards drive around in Escalades. People may not believe me, but I worked in a HS where 75% of the kids got free or reduced lunch, and 75% of the students wore Coogi, Girbaud, or Ebisu clothes while sporting Ipods and the like. I'm also not saying that the poor should look poor, but when kids are wearing $100-200 an item clothing, you know someone's mama has some misplaced priorities. I've also lost a job in the last 3 years, but I worked my butt off to find a new one to get my family back on their feet.
But, of course, I'm "not too bright and have a poor grasp of the subject."

ICU is right. s7 is oversimplifying the issue and does not offer a viable solution to the existing problem with the program.

Well, the solution itself is very simple. If we don't reduce welfare to it's most basic form (a food allowance of $200-300 for a family with an expiration date), then soon those who are life-long entitlement chasers will never become productive citizens. People quickly begin to reflect the values of their nation. Our nation used to be one of hard-working, save every penny types, and consumerism and entitlement have in a way destroyed this fact.
If it ever comes to the point where the entitlement class can out vote the producing class, the country will go bankrupt and then those who bankrupted it will lash out in frustration. This may seem like an extreme statement, but it is an unavoidable truth.

Philly also has an idea it's been testing for some time.
Again s7, you do not offer a realistic, vible solution. especially in light of the current economic downfall.

For being a high school teacher you're pretty out of touch, that last comeback was pretty old and lame s7rugge1e. However, you are on a mentally immature par with your students.
@ Paul - spot on!

In May of 2009 I got laid off from employment with a company that i ahd been working for over 11 years, was making over 39k per year, had a home, insurance, 401k, retirement - the whole nine yards, 2 kids a dog and a disabled husband. So of course I was the bread winner.
When i got laid off I was devastated !!! We exhausted everything that we had in savings, my 401k plan, my retirement plan etc etc... then i had to file for unemployment so that i would have a steady stream of income to pay for things. Yes I did apply for DCF benefoits, I did get food stamps to help with groceries to feed my family and myself too. i was ashamed for the most part and hated doing that but then thought - you know i have paid in taxes for more than 15 yrs and i needed help from the government for a change so i took advantage of that help. i needed medical because i was scheduled to have a major surgery done before the layoff where they cut my insurance immediately so i had to cancel the surgery (that i really needed) carpal tunnel for more than 6 yrs already and only getting worse. Needless to say I agree with what most of you are stating about people that think that the government owes them this (which they don't) and those are the ones that are driving around in new cars, wearing lots of gold and large gold too !!! since this has happened to me i have lost everything, had to sell my home, sell the truck i had to downsize to a smaller paid off vehicle and do whatever i needed to make sure that my family was okay and had a place to stay ! we never ex[ect things like this to happen but for people like me it was a godsend to have these benefits available to my family and myself as well. we have not abused the system at all and i see people doing that every single day ..

Just get rid of EBT and have warehouses like Sam's Club that have Government overstock Why do we reward corporations and farmers with tax breaks when they could supply them . Do you think the liqueur and tobacco would donate ? If your on welfare you should not be able to claim your kids as a tax credit you should not get anything back in taxes and if your kids are in the foster system you should have to pay child support to the state as any absent parent should.

use of ebt cards
I feel it doesn't matter what state we live in the ebt card is abused inevey state and every city. I realize there are people out there that need help with food. But I think that every person that uses the ebt card should be 18 years old and have to show id also these people should be audited once every few months on what they are purchasing. I see people every day buying candy, donuts, gum, energy drinks and pop where is there any nutritous value in these foods. After purchasing these things with their ebt cards they buy scratch offs and cigarettes with cash. So if you have money for cigs or lottery tickets why do you need an ebt card??? Also sending their children to the store to purchase whateve with ebt is wrong. The adults should be making the purchases of nutritous food for their children and family.
