Buyer beware

Watch out!
We have a vacuum and air filter. It’s not that they are not descent products but we did not go into the purchase fully informed and they are waaaaaay overpriced. The air filter takes one large main filter at about $130. That’s yearly to renew the “lifetime warranty”. Make sure you read it carefully (our fault we didn‘t pay enough attention). We were told it was covered short of dropping it in a swimming pool. Not nearly. It also takes a carbon pre filter and post filter that helps eliminate odor to be changed every 3 months ($60 for 4 sets). It does not work that well on odor removal. Running on high, it’s supposed to circulate 1200 to 1400 sq. ft. in about an hour. How come I still have dinner smells lingering even overnight (bacon, fish, smoke esp.) even though I only filter around 900 sq. ft.? Late night I do turn it to low. During the day I keep it on medium (supposed to circulate in 1 1/2-2 hrs.) Why the adjustment? It’s loud. Even on medium. Then sometimes when it’s on low there is an annoying whirring sound from time to time. We have owned it for four years now. The second year the lid started to rattle. I mentioned it to the service man and was blown off. So I got creative and used a large rubber band as a gasket. It worked for awhile but I’ve found it works better to wedge a thin piece of cardboard in the crevice. When we bought them there was a service center 30 miles away. In less than a year it was closed. When it was time for my free service checkup I was sent a carton and shipping label to send it in. The following two years a serviceman came to the house to clean and sell us replacement filters. This year they called to take our filter order. I asked about the cleaning and service and he contacted that department. Well, they sent me a carton but no shipping label. I guess the shipping is now on me. I also paid shipping on the filters when in the past they were delivered by the serviceman. I’m a smoker with multiple pets and we live on gravel roads so it does get a workout. However, considering we only occasionally open windows in the spring, there’s a lot of dust in the house still. There will be visible dust on the pre filter before I clean it off but apparently not enough because there‘s still a lot on everything else. It does take a lot of smoke out by the look of the filter but not nearly all of it. We were told the main filter was good until the filter light was red. Later I was told otherwise. I used the last filter 15 months without the light turning. They really get you when you have to buy a new one yearly (to renew the “warranty“) when the old one’s still functional.
Ok, the vacuum….The sales person neglected to tell us about one of the filters. There are two ( $35 ea) that they suggest be changed every six months and filter cones. The cones (12 @ $20) basically have to be changed after every vacuuming. The canister is dark so it’s hard to see how full it is. If you open it, then dump it and change the filter or you’ll foul the big filter. We were also told it was good on tile but it’s not. It does a great job picking up pet hair from carpet. Even my Kirby didn’t do as well. The first day I had it though, one of the attachments fell out of the holder and when I put it back in that slot cracked. I told the serviceman on the next visit and he fixed it by wrapping the crack with electrical tape. Ha! The whole thing is made of plastic. The handle wobbles and I’m terrified of bumping something that might crack the case. My mother-in-law’s Bissel is more sturdy. The other day, one of the hose tubes cracked without much pressure (I “fixed” it with electrical tape…Ha!). Last year the serviceman said he was surprised the brush bar didn’t need to be replaced. He said they usually only last a couple years ($75). Bad me only vacuums about twice a month. I also saw him ruin a filter that needed a little twist to install. Scary… So, Last year I spent about $430 ($100 for 100 filter cones) on filters for the vacuum and air filter and I bought them in “package deals” which saves some money. All in all, I wish I hadn’t bought them. I think we should have dickered to see if we could have done better on the price but. They ended up costing us $3000 plus the trade in of my $1500 Kirby. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I should have at least insisted on keeping mine for my daughter. It only took about a week for me to regret the purchase. I got caught up in the excellent job the vacuum did. Please forgive the rambling but if I can save one person it’s worth it. Otherwise, just go in with eyes wide open and clarify costs and warranty. When the brush bar goes out on the vacuum, I think I’m done. I’m not even sure I’ll continue with the air filter….maybe until it quits.
