DISHONEST CHECK PROCEEDURES
They didn't tell you the check cleared. You were told that the funds were available. You also failed to follow the scam warnings posted on craigslist.

the bank does not have insurance against someone who writes you a bad check. you should have let the check sit for 4 to 7 days to make SURE it was a good check before taking any action on your sale. your bank will clear the check on the same day - it takes time for that check to clear the home bank that it is written from.
