Consumer reviews about BayTech Web Design

Website does not perform as contracted

I can't agree with the above negative review more. This was the worst experience I have ever had in my professional career. Despite paying them tens of thousands of dollars to design a site for us, they provided a nearly worthless site that in the end averaged no more than a handful of unique visitors a day.

Here we were as an industrial company with no experience developing websites. Rather than try to do it ourselves, we did what any smart business people do, and we hired a company that we thought were experts in the field. If we had only known then what we know now about web development, we would never had paid such a ridiculous amount of money for something that should have been so simple.

What We Asked For

We asked for a backend interface for us (who are not super website tech savvy) to be able to use. We also wanted a site that would take advantage of web 2.0 characteristics (user generated content) and be SEO friendly. What we got was a site with little functionality, terribly SEO unfriendly, and a terrible development process.

Main Complaints

1. We performed all troubleshooting/debugging, for the entire project. We also were the only ones that brought up several problems with their design (despite not being experts at anything web related, we pointed out the lack of meta data inclusion, extremely long URLs, etc.)

2. The project was projected to take 3 months, and ended up taking over a year.

3. Our "SEO package" consisted of us performing all keyword research, selecting all the keywords, writing all the SEO descriptions, and inputing them into the site. We also did all of the content writing, published a blog with 50+ articles, press releases, and the majority of link building. All they did was submit us to a few directories, and "optimize" a few of our pages. In the end, of the 100+ pages we had, we had dozens of pages with the identical descriptions, duplicate pages, multiple URLs for the same articles, and no meta data on many key pages.

4. We seemed to be the experts when it came to designing the site to be SEO friendly. We made them redesign the site to include a blog, we took issue with using an opensource forum that cannot be crawled/indexed by google, and forced them to include the ability to edit meta data (in the end this only partially worked on a few pages).

5. Instead of using several opensource components (such as wordpress) to build our site, they insisted on creating a completely custom site architecture that according to other professional programmers/web design firms, is "terribly subpar", and lacks more than half of the functions that opensource components have, in addition to being nearly unindexable by major search engines.

Conclusion

In the end, we ended up doing a vast amount of the work ourselves, the project took substantially longer than they projected, tasks that required expert knowledge (SEO) fell on our shoulders, and when problems were pointed out, they failed to accept responsibility and correct them.

In fact after terminating our relationship with Baytech, our in-house people were able to create another website for our company, that ended up having a good percentage of the total functionality as the one they built for us (tens of thousands in costs including our peoples time over roughly a year) in one week using wordpress. Our current site is ranked #1 for several of our target keywords, while they never were able to get us off the 5th page despite over a year of development, and 6 months of overlapping SEO work.

In Addition to all of the above, after posting a similar review elsewhere on the internet, I was contacted by Baytech and threatened with a lawsuit over my (truthful) comments. Sounds like I am not the only one to have that experience either.

Website does not perform as contracted

I had a extreme terrible experience working with this company. Most of the terrible things happened to me are like the other bad reviews.

I have Baytech to design a online printing web site for me around 2007 and 2008. Right after they finish the web site, the economy crashed and we dropped the project. We didn't test the web site thoroughly because we thought we were no longer need the web site and I signed off the paper work to except the completion of the web site.

Last year 2011, we feel the market start to have potential for printing again. We went back to try to use the web site again. We found tons of problems and the web site was a trash.

The major problem - No way we could input our product size and weight for shipping!! There also tons of problems.

Another problem that they've never fixed for me is a server error. Everytime when we log in to the backend administrator page, it gave us an "server error
See below):

After I spent thousand of dollars to let them fix the problem, they came back to me and said they need more money to fix this problem.

Another issue is we paid $1600 back in 2008 to add a real time shipping module for UPS and Fedex. After 3 years of time I understand the web site need to have a update in order to work with UPS and Fedex system. This time they want to charge me $9600 to update. I'm not a technical person and if anyone have knowledge about this, please help me to judge it.

BayTech Web Design Best Price?

lol. if you came here you're most likely just going to find complaints about Baytech. However not me, I've had a positive experience with Baytech. They've developed many versions of our site. Anon, you're incorrect, they do have a team in Shanghai. But you should not discount them on that, Shanghai is an international city, much in the same way Silicon Valley is. They are a leading global company as their portfolio shows.

We too are a large company out of the Midwest that focuses on transportation management. We are currently completing our second phase with Baytech. They have many fully qualified team members on their staff that have masters degrees. They've worked for Ford, and Hewlett Packard respectively.
